Vat Savitri Vrat 2026: Date & Timings

Vat Savitri Vrat is observed twice every year in the month of Jyestha. Once during the new moon day, which this year falls on May 16, 2026, beginning at 5:11 a.m., and the other, on the full moon day of Jyeshtha.

While in North India, like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, etc, Vat Savitri vrat is observed on the new moon day (May 16, 2026) of Jyeshtha month based on the Purnimant Calendar, in the west and south parts of India, like Maharashtra, Gujarat, etc., it is observed on the full moon day of the Jyestha month according to the Amant calendar.

1. Vat Savitri Fast (new moon): Will be observed on May 16th 2026 from 5:11 a.m. till 1:30 am on 17th May 2026.

2. Vat Savitri Purnima Vrat: Will be observed on the full moon day on Monday, June 29th 2026 at 3:06 a.m. till 5:26 a.m. of 30th June 2026.

Vat Savitri Vrat: Story of Savitri and Satyavan

The story of Savitri and Satyavan appears in the Van Parva of the Mahabharata, where it is narrated as a story of devotion and destiny.

​Once upon a time, in ancient India, there lived a king named Raja Ashwapati, who, after years without a child, had a daughter named Savitri. When Savitri reached marriageable age, he told her she could find a worthy husband, and she set out on a journey to find the best-suited husband for herself. Upon her return, she appeared before the court. 

Upon her return, she appeared before the court, where Narad Muni was also sitting with her father, and her father asked her whether she had found a suitable husband. She replied that she had seen Satyavan in Tapovan and would like to marry him. As soon as Narad Muni heard Satyavan’s name, he told Raja Ashwapati that Satyavan had a very short lifespan and would die in a year. But Savitri had made up her mind and told her father that she had chosen Satyavan to be her husband. On this, Ashvapati gave up and arranged their marriage.

After marriage, she started living with her husband and in-laws, but as time passed, her fear kept increasing, and her anxiety grew. As Narad had said, when only four days were left before her husband’s death, Savitri began fasting, and the day of his destined death arrived.

Satyavan was going to the forest that day to collect wood, and Savitri insisted on going with him as well, so he took her along. As soon as he started cutting the tree, his head started to spin, and he felt a sharp pain. Savitri immediately understood what was happening. He came down from the tree and lay on her lap.

As soon as Satyavan lay down, he passed away. Savitri began to pray, and then she saw Yamraj approaching.

Savitri prayed to him and asked why he was there to take her husband, since his messengers (doot) usually come to take people. To this, he said that Satyavan was a righteous man ( a dharmatma), and his messengers (doot) were not worthy of taking him, and so he had to come himself. He took Satyavan’s life and started moving towards the south. Savitri also began to follow him, and he asked, "Why are u coming?" She replied that she would follow him, as he was her husband and she was a devoted wife (Pativrata). 

Yamraj told her that she could ask him anything except for her husband’s life, and he would grant it. She asked for her in-law’s vision, and he granted it. She again started walking behind them. He said she could ask him for one more wish, and she asked for her in-laws’ kingdom as a boon; he granted it and started walking. Still, she continued to walk behind them. He said again, "You can ask for anything," and she asked for a hundred sons for her father. Yamraj gave it to her. She still began to follow them. Yamraj again said, " You can again ask for anything except your husband’s life. And she asked for a hundred sons to be born to her and Satyavan, and he granted it to her and moved ahead.

But Savitri still followed him. To this, Yamraj said, "Go back now.” She replied, "You have granted me a hundred with Satyavan, but without him, that would not be possible".

Yamraj, looking confused but pleased and impressed by her faith and wisdom, told Savitri that her story would be remembered for ages. He granted her wish and returned Satyavan’s life. Savitri and Satyavan then walked back home together. When they arrived, they saw that Satyavan’s parents had regained their vision and their kingdom, and their lives were filled with happiness again.

Rituals of Vat Savitri Puja

Women around the country start their preparations days before the main day, as they do for every other festival or custom.

​For Vat Savitri Vrat, they wake up early in the morning in Brahma Muhurta, take a holy bath and wear traditional attire, often red or yellow, and do 16 sringars. These two colours symbolise prosperity and marriage. And then they prepare items such as fruit, thread and offerings and keep vermillion rice along with fruits, flowers, threads and an image of Savitri, Satyavan and Yama for worship.

After getting adorned in a solah srinagar, women head over to Vat Vriksha (Banyan Tree), clean the area under the tree, and sprinkle pure Ganga water.

After this, they often pour some water on the tree, apply kumkum to the tree, haldi and akshata to the trunk, do parikrama (they go round the tree), and wrap a thread around the banyan tree 7 times while also praying for your husband’s prosperity and long life. And then, finally, recite or listen to the Vat Story fast. After the puja, offer fruits and flowers as part of the ritual, then seek blessings from the elders and offer a prayer for the family’s well-being.
